West Point, New York 1993

I have been taking photographs for almost 30 years, going back to my student days. Then it was about hours in a darkroom, and theatre production photos taken on a second-hand Canon T70 and the much missed Fuji Neopan 1600. These images either ended up in student newspapers next to reviews, or with prints sold to the actors for portfolios or as mementos. However, following a trip to the USA in 1993, and in the years since, I have come to realise that it is when I travel that photography seems to speak to (and for) me most personally. Bob Kryst’s book Spirit of Place (2000) talks of looking to capture the spirit of a location, and, yes, I try to focus upon doing just that. But my favourite images are increasingly in harmony with a very personal spirit - maybe not what I always am but certainly what resonates. Often the photos give me a sense of tranquility and simplicity; sometimes solitude. My most loved photos contain both of these spirits, and many are here on this website. And whilst my work broadly splits into documentary or location travel photography, they are united by these two spirits - of place and personal spirit.
